Gutters & Downspouts

Paint Metal Gutters and Downspouts

Project Scenario

You need to re-paint your metal gutters and downspouts. How should I proceed?

  • Remove dirt, loose paint, and other contaminants by pressure washing or wire brushing.
  • Clean with mildew retardant solution, if necessary.
  • Use a medium grit sanding block to create a slight profile.
  • Rinse thoroughly to remove any sanding residue and let dry.

Primer Coat

Select the proper primer by the type of gutters and downspouts that you have:
(NEW) Aluminum:  05910, Prime Solution, Bonding Primer
(Weathered) Aluminum, Plastic and Vinyl:   May be able to be Finish Coated directly, when all existing surfaces are sound. Speak with your Cloverdale Paint representative for more information.

Finish Coat

Best:  0270X, Guardian 100% Acrylic Latex, "Satin" finish
Better:  0201X, WeatherOne Covercoat, 100% Acrylic Latex, "Satin" finish

Caution! Things to consider

  • Check for and clean clogged downspouts.
  • Check for pin hole leaks. Repair or replace as necessary.
